Dispute Settlement - History made - 1.25 Crore long-pending cases settled in single day by Lok Adalat

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, DEC 07, 2014: A record of sort was created in the history of Indian Judiciary when about 1.25 Crore long-pending cases were settled in one day thanks to the Lok Adalat innovation.

As per National Legal Aid Service Authority the total number could be more as information has been trickling in from different parts of the country. For organisers, the response was hugely beyond their expectations.

There were about 3.6 Crore cases pending when the countrywide drive was launched under the tutelage of the Chief Justice of India Justice H L Dattu. And by the time the day-long Drive ended the tally collapsed to less than 2.5 Crore. In terms of financial implications, the citizens also got as much compensation as Rs 3000 Crore.

In the first National Lok Adalat Drive last November, as many as 71 lakh cases were settled. Taking a cue from the last year drive, the organisers were well prepared to take the tally beyond one crore mark and the response proved to be too overwhelming for them.

Like last year, all sorts of cases relating to cheque bounce, motor accident claims, traffic violation, consumer disputes and labour matters were sorted out.
