Dadra & Nagar Haveli registers highest per capita power consumption; Bihar at bottom

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, FEB 08, 2014: THE per capita consumption of Power is growing in the country. On an all India basis, the average consumption was 884 kWh in the year 2011-12. The average per capita consumption in 2009-10 and 2011-12 was 779 and 819 kWh respectively.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli topped the list with 13767 kWh per capita electricity consumption in 2011-12 while Bihar had the lowest per capita consumption of 134 kWh in the same year. In the year 2011-12, the top five States/UTs were Dadra Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Puducherry, Goa and Punjab and the lowest five States/UTs were Bihar, Manipur, Assam, Tripura and Nagaland with respect to average electricity consumption. While Dadra and Nagar Haveli had the highest per capita consumption in 2009-10 and 2010-11, Bihar showed the lowest per capita consumption in the same years.

Increasing the power generation capacity is one of the steps taken by the Central Government to raise per capita consumption of Power. Generation capacity addition target during 12th Five Year Plan is 88,537 MW from conventional sources on all India basis. With this level of capacity addition, the demand for power is likely to be met by the terminal year of 12th Five Year Plan. Central Government has advised the States/UTs to tie up for procurement of power to meet their demand, as per their anticipated demand supply scenario. Distribution is another important area, in which schemes like Rajeev Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), Restructured-Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP) and Financial Restructuring Plan (FRP) for Distribution Companies have been undertaken by the Government.

This information was given Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister of State for Power (I/C) in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
