All smart phones to have GPS and panic button from Jan 1, 2018

NEW DELHI, NOV 24, 2017: IN a consumer-friendly and also enforcement agencies-friendly move the Govt has amended the Rules under the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933 to make it mandatory for mobile phone manufacturers to provide panic button and global positioning system (GPS) in all smart phones from January 1, 2018.

In the Panic button and Global Positiong System facility in all mobile phone handsets Rules, 2016, for rule 4, the following rule shall be substituted, namely.—

“4. GPS in new smart mobile handset.-With effect from the 1st January, 2018, no smart phone handset manufacturing company shall sell the new smart mobile phone handset in India without the facility of identifying the location through Satellite based GPS”.
