Guwahati DRI nabs three persons with gold bars worth Rs 2.4 Crore

GUWAHATI, DEC 17, 2017: WORKING on a tip-off the DRI sleuths here conducted a search in the a rented residential premises located at Shantipur hill Side, Guwahati and recovered 49 gold bars of foreign origin cumulatively weighing 8.20 kg valued at Rs. 2.40 Crore from three persons of West Bengal who were staying there and were preparing for transportation of the smuggled gold to Kolkata.

The smuggled gold bars were brought illegally from Myanmar through Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur. The smuggled gold was seized and the three persons were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act 1962.

In a seperate operation, the Sleuths intercepted one person at Malda Railway station and recovered 6 pieces of foreign origin gold bars weighing 2.3 Kg gms valued at Rs. 69 lakh. The intercepted person was carrying the said gold bars in specially tailored waist belts made of cloth fasten around his waist.

It was believed that the these gold bars were smuggled into India from Bangladesh via Hili - Malda route. The smuggled gold has been seized and one person, who hails from Bhojpur District of Bihar, was arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act 1962.

In the current financial year starting from 01/04/2017 till date, in the region spread over West Bengal and the North eastern states, the DRI has seized over 185 kg of Gold valued at close to Rs 56 Crores in the market, smuggled from Bangladesh, Burma and even Bhutan.

DRI is closely monitoring the trends of Smuggling of gold across the porous border regions and making sustained efforts to combat the menace by enhanced vigil and surveillance.
