GST - Price stickers over MRP - New deadline is March, 2018

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, DEC 24, 2017: WITH the North Block taking unduly long time to clean up the mess on the GST front, the Consumer Affairs Ministry has no choice but to go on extending the deadline for pasting fresh price stickers on the MRP printed unsold packaged goods. The Union Minister, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, yesterday said that the Govt has further extended the deadline to March, 2018, permitting the industry to paste price stickers on the printed MRP.

The Minister said that such an extension was necessitated by the fresh reduction in the tax rates of 178 items by the GST Council last month.

On the issue of hotels and restaurants charging huge prices of MRP-printed water bottles, Mr Paswan said that the Govt has decided to file review petition on the Apex Court verdict which earlier found merit in such a pricing methodology followed by the hospitaliity industry. The Supreme Court had ruled that the provisions of Weights & Measures Act do not apply to mineral waters sold by the hotels.
