Kolkata DRI nabs four persons with smuggled gold worth Rs 5 Crore

KOLKATA, JAN 08, 2018: IN a big catch the DRI sleuths here nabbed three persons travelling by Vibhuti Express (Train No. 12333) at Howrah Railway Station when they just boarded the train for their onward journey to Varanasi, on 05.01.2018.
On search of the three intercepted persons, a total of 10.60 Kg of gold of foreign origin, valued at Rs. 3.36 Crore, was seized from their possession, which was secreted in specially made cloth belts tied around their waist. Indian Currency of Rs. 4,12,810/- was also seized from the apprehended persons.
All the three persons were arrested and in a further follow up action undertaken immediately, another 5.1 Kg of gold of foreign origin valued at Rs. 1.62 Crore was also seized from the possession of another person, Gyan Chand Verma of the same syndicate travelling by the same train, by officers of DRI in Patna at Patna Railway Station in the morning of 06.01.2018.
Thus, there has been a total seizure of 15.7 Kg gold of foreign origin valued at 4.98 Crore emanating from Kolkata.
In the current financial year starting from 01/04/2017 till date, in the region spread over West Bengal and the North Eastern States, the DRI has seized over 238 kg of Gold valued at close to Rs. 70 Crores in the market, smuggled from Bangladesh, Burma and even Bhutan.
