e-Way Bill - Transporters call for chakkajam from Friday

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, JULY 18, 2018: FOR the GST tax administration and also the trade and industry, the e-Way Bill System may appear to be largely settled but it does not apply mutatis mutandis to the lot of transporters. What seems to have triggered a nationwide outrage among them is a recent incident of imposing huge penalty on a leading transport company for not updating Part-B of the e-Way Bill.

What seems to have rubbed salt into their wounds is the recent Madhya Pradesh HC decision, upholding the imposition of penalty for clear violation of the legal mandate. In response to it, the All India Motor Transport Congress has given a call for nationwide chakkajam from Friday.

It is learnt that the Anti-Evasion of Bureau of the MP SGST authorities had caught M/s Gati Kintetsu Express - 2018-TIOL-68-HC-MP-GST for not updating Part-B of the Bill and had imposed a penalty of Rs 1.32 Crore. The accused had moved the High Court but no relief was granted.

Now, it is to be seen whether the Govt caves in to this sort of tactics of the transporters when the contravention of e-Way Bill provisions have been upheld by the High Court.
