All 26 Indian N-facilities are now under IAEA safeguards: Dr Basu

NEW DELHI, SEPT 20, 2018: WHILE addressing the 62 nd General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Vienna, Austria yesterday the Indian Atomic Energy Secretary, Dr Sekhar Basu, said that India has placed two Russian designed Pressurised Light Water Reactor and two Pressurised Heavy Reactors being built with Indian technology under IAEA Safeguards. Thus, in all 26 Indian nuclear facilities are placed under IAEA Safeguards.
He said that the 27th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2018) aiming to provide a forum for the discussion on key physics and technology issues is being held in India in October 2018.
Dr Basu noted that nuclear power and its applications has always been well integrated globally. Keeping up with the pace of enhancing international cooperation, India has signed:
++ Industrial way forward agreement between NPCIL, India and EDF of France in March 2018 for the establishment of six nuclear power reactors of EPR technology;
++ Agreement with the Department of Natural Resources of Canada on Science & Technology and Innovation
++ Cooperation agreement with VINATOM of Vietnam on training and capacity building.
He also informed the gathering that in the field of Neutrino Physics India has signed inter-governmental collaboration agreement with Fermilab during the visit of US Secretary of Energy to India in April this year.
On the multilateral front India has assumed chairmanship of ITER Council since January 1, 2018 for a period of two years. Government of India also approved cost escalation for the in kind contribution part of the project.
