By TIOL News Service
NEW DELHI, SEPT 16, 2019: THE canvas of law is globally known for its mercurial temperament. To keep pace with the dynamics of such changes, a legal practitioner has to burn midnight oil. Against such grim backdrop, a good number of young advocates have been doing well in India. The Economic Times 40 under Forty award selects top 40 young Indian leaders from diverse backgrounds. It is a list of 40 chosen leaders in diverse fields - innovative entertainment, investment bankers, second generation business tycoons, etc who are under 40 in terms of age.
The first ever tax advocate to be selected in last seven years is Mr Abhishek A Rastogi, Partner, Khaitan & Co. Before strengthening up the indirect tax litigation team with Khaitan, he worked with E&Y and PwC for 16 years. He is an author of several books on taxation - 'GST - A Professional Guide' and 'Professional's Guide to Service Tax'. He has also published a Handbook on Foreign Trade Policy. Former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had written foreword to his GST book.
Mr Rastogi shot to fame because of his passion for championing the cause of the assessees through the writ route. When the GST was introduced, our law-makers forgot to do justice to all segments of the industry. For lack of procedures, unintended omissions and drafting errors, many serious challenges emerged on the GST canvas which Mr Rastogi took up through the writ channel and many of such writs have gone against the Revenue. He is presently representing assessees in as many as 100 such petitions before various High Courts.
