Hallmarking of Jewellery to be mandatory from Jan 2021; 877 Assaying Centres set up

NEW DELHI, DEC 07, 2019: IT has been decided that notification in respect of Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Artefacts would be issued on January 15, 2020 and it would become mandatory in the country w.e.f. 15th January, 2021.
As on Oct 31, 2019, 877 Assaying and Hallmarking centres have been recognized by BIS which are equipped to hallmark jewellery in three categories 14, 18 and 22 carats as per IS 1417:2016. The Assaying and Hallmarking centres are set up by private entrepreneurs and is a market driven activity where decision to open a Centre is taken by the entrepreneur based on commercial viability as assessed by the entrepreneur at that location.
This information was given in a written reply by the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Mr. Danve Raosaheb Dadarao in Rajya Sabha yesterday.
