42nd GST Council meeting - Last-minute efforts on to rope in support for voting, if any

NEW DELHI, OCT 05, 2020: THE virtual 42nd meeting of the GST Council is learnt to be heading for a showdown between the Centre-supported group of States and non-BJP ruled States which have openly rejected both the options offered by the Union of India.
The full-day meeting is scheduled to commence at 11.30 AM and is likely to be dominated by the group demanding not only voting on the compensation issue but also setting up of the dispute resolution mechanism as per Art 279A(11) of the 101st Constitution Amendment Act. Experts say that any decision of the Council not to set up such a mechanism or even any delay may constitute a valid reason to knock at the doors of the Apex Court.
As per the last count, as many as 10 States had rejected both the options and an effort was on to rope in more Opposition-ruled States like Orissa and Andhra Pradesh so that in case of voting, it becomes a razor-thin margin case for the Centre which does not seem to be too keen to pay much heed to the demands of the sparring group.
