PUNE, NOV 28, 2020: Wrapping up his three-city vaccine tour, Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi visited the Serum Institute of India (SII) facilities in Pune today evening which is conducting Oxford University and AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine trials in India.
“Had a good interaction with the team at Serum Institute of India. They shared details about their progress so far on how they plan to further ramp up vaccine manufacturing. Also took a look at their manufacturing facility,” Mr Modi tweeted on his visit.
SII will soon be submitting data from the two full doses of clinical trials in India to the Drugs Contoller General of India (DCGI). The Covidshield vaccine has been administered to around 1,600 participants as two full doses 28 days apart.
In their trials, Oxford University said their vaccine has shown 70% efficacy, but the one dosing regimen, which administered two half doses a month apart, was found to be around 90% effective.
Mr Adar Poonawalla, CEO of SII, thanked Mr Modi for his visit and said they discussed “in detail, the complex challenges yet to come and review the vaccine production status.”
SII also shared details on their progress and plans to ramp up vaccine manufacturing with the prime minister.
