MSP operations continue to benefit 35 lac farmers

NEW DELHI, DEC 08, 2020: IN the ongoing Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2020-21, 35.03 lakh farmers have benefited from the existing minimum support price (MSP) scheme with a value of Rs 65,111 crore, the government said on Monday.
The Ministry of Agriculture said it had procured 344.86 lakh tonnes of paddy till 6 December 2020, showing a 22% increase when compared to the corresponding period last year.
Paddy procurement progressed in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar, the ministry said.
Further, based on the proposal from the states, approval was also accorded for procurement of 45.24 lakh tonnes of pulse and oilseeds, and copra under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).
The government purchased 1,33,550.58 tonnes of moong, urad, groundnut pods and soyabean having MSP value of Rs. 718.51 crores benefitting 76,002 farmers in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan.
Similarly, 5,089 tonnes of copra having MSP value of Rs. 52.40 crore was also procured from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu from 3,961 farmers.
“In respect of copra and urad, rates are ruling above MSP in most of the major producing states,” the ministry noted.
Procurement operations of seed cotton (Kapas) under MSP are also ongoing in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka with 38,32,259 cotton bales valued at Rs.11,084.78 crore procured from 7,50,779 farmers.
