All industries in Delhi to switch over to PNG by January 31

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, DEC 22, 2020: NOTING that the industrial sector was one of the major contributors to air pollution in Delhi, the Commission for Air Quality Management has directed all industries in the capital to switch over to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) by 31 January, 2021.

The Commission made the announcement at a meeting chaired by head, Mr MM Kutty, and representatives of the Delhi government, GAIL and Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL).

They reviewed the progress of switching over of about 1,644 industrial units spread across the Delhi NCR region's 50 industrial areas to PNG.

Though a sizeable number of industries are already using PNG, the Commission stressed the need to switch over to PNG by all identified industries in Delhi by the set deadline.

IGL and GAIL were directed to complete the pipeline work, metering and associated infrastructure to ensure the supply of PNG to all the industries

The Commission also directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to inspect and identify the industries using unapproved fuels and to take stringent penal action in case of non-compliances.

The Centre formed the 20-member Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas, under the Environment Ministry last month.
