NEW DELHI, DEC 24, 2020: HEALTH secretary Mr Rajesh Bhushan on Wednesday reviewed the status of the travellers coming from the U.K. who were found to be COVID-19 positive in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Goa, Punjab, Gujarat and Kerala, before the flight ban came into effect.
At least 20 passengers so far, have tested positive for COVID-19, amid rising concern of the new and more deadly virus strain detected in the U.K. and the temporary flight ban that went into effect on 23 December.
The secretary discussed the states' response measures and the standard operating procedures related to the epidemiological surveillance of the new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus detected in Britain.
States have been advised to access the details of passengers coming from the U.K. since 25 November through the online AIR-SUVIDHA portal and Bureau of Immigration. The travellers who were found positive for COVID-19 must now be subjected to a spike gene RTPCR test to assess whether they were inflicted with the new viral strain.
The government shared the list of six identified laboratories in New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Bengaluru, Kalyani and Pune where the samples can be sent for genome sequencing. The number of such designated labs will increase over time, the Health Ministry said.
On Tuesday, the ministry had issued a standard operating procedure for people arriving in India from the U.K. which mandates RT-PCR testing on arrival and isolation in a separate institutional facility for those who are found to be positive.
