NEW DELHI, JAN 13, 2021: THE government's agricultural export body, APEDA is working closely with stakeholders to prepare an action plan for 2021-26 to increase the export of millet and millet products, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said on Wednesday.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) organised a virtual buyer-seller meet in association with the Andhra Pradesh Drought Mitigation Project (APDMP) with millet exporters and farmer producer organisations (FPOs) for establishing marketing linkages.
"Increasing interest in reviving the consumption of millets across various countries is favouring the growth prospects of this product in recent years within the country and for exports as well," the ministry stated.
Considering the potential of increasing exports and the focus given by government for development of millet sector of nutri-cereals, APEDA is interacting with the Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR), National Institute Nutrition, and CSIR - Central Food Technological Research Institute for perspective planning of five years.
The buyer-seller platform has been utilised for exporters and FPOs to interact with each other for supply and sourcing of products. Further, efforts will be made on identification of organic millet clusters, registration of FPOs and millet exporters at APEDA's Farmer Connect Portal.
Millet is a common term to categorize small-seeded grasses that are often termed nutri-cereals, and includes sorghum, pearl millet, ragi, small millet, foxtail millet, proso millet, barnyard millet, kodo millet and other millets.
