India reports 16,946 new COVID-19 cases, 198 fatalities

NEW DELHI, JAN 14, 2021: INDIA'S COVID-19 tally stands at 1.05 crore as 16,946 infections were reported across the country in the past 24 hours, said the Ministry of Health today.
"The ongoing trend of contraction of India's daily new cases continues," the ministry said, noting that India has recorded less than 20,000 daily new cases in the past week.
Meanwhile, recoveries surged to 1,01,46,763 as 17,652 people recuperated from the disease, pushing the national recovery rate to 96.52%.
The COVID-19 case fatality stands at 1.44% with 198 new death reported in the past day, taking the toll to 1,51,727.
The coronavirus active caseload remained below three lakh at 2,13,603 as the share of active cases shrunk to 2.03%.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 2,43,191 samples were tested on Wednesday and a total of 18,42,32,305 samples tested up to 13 January.
The country is gearing up for the massive COVID-19 vaccination drive beginning from 16 January.
