BENGALURU, JAN 16, 2021: DEFENCE Minister Mr Rajnath Singh on Friday unveiled India's first state-of-the-art indigenously designed and developed Driverless Metro Car which will be deployed by Mumbai Metro at the BEML manufacturing facility.
The minister, who visited the state-run BEML's Bengaluru Complex, said he was proud work the team of engineers and technicians are doing and called them the "real 'Aatmanirbhar Warrior' who are taking India ahead."
Mr Singh noted that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) metro project is 63% indigenously produced and will increase to 75% over the next three years.
"This reflects Indian industry's overwhelming response to Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi's Aatmanairbhar Bharat Abhiyan call," he said.
The metro car is meant for the MMRDA's Mumbai Metro under the MRS1 project. According to BEML, the driverless metro cars have a stainless-steel body and a capacity of 2,280 passengers in a six-car Metro train-set.
Mr Singh also expressed hope that the driver-less technology will be expanded to other fields of defence in the future such as tanks and fighter jets.
He virtually launched the Aerospace Assembly Hangar, situated within BEML's Bengaluru Complex, and unveiled the first indigenously manufactured Tatra Cabin by BEML.
Secretary of Defence Production Mr Raj Kumar, BEML Chairman and Managing Director Mr Deepak Kumar Hota, and other senior Defence Ministry officials were also present.
