Figures released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on Sunday, showed that the government saw a 25.25% increase in paddy procurement in Kharif 2020-21, compared to the same period last year.

"Paddy procurement for Kharif 2020-21 is continuing smoothly," the ministry said.

During the ongoing season, it has procured 564.17 lakh tonne of paddy up to 16 January, from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Karnataka and West Bengal.

Punjab alone has contributed 202.77 lakh tonne which is 35.94% of the total procurement.

The government has approved procurement of 51.66 lakh tonne of pulse and oilseeds under the price support scheme (PSS). Further, sanction for purchasing 1.23 lakh tonne of copra was also given.

Till 16 January, the government through its nodal agencies has procured 2.96 lakh tonne of moong, urad, groundnut pods and soybean having MSP value of Rs 1,613.88 crore, benefitting 1,59,072 farmers.

Today the Supreme Court will be hearing the Centre's application seeking an injunction against any kind of protest from the farmers which would disrupt the Republic Day celebration on 26 January.
