79.24 Lac farmers benefit from govt's MSP operations this kharif season

NEW DELHI, JAN 18, 2021: IN the ongoing kharif marketing season, about 79.24 lakh farmers have benefitted from the Centre's procurement operations with Minimum Support Price (MSP) value of Rs 1,06,516.31 crore, even as thousands of farmers continue to protest the farm laws.
Figures released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on Sunday, showed that the government saw a 25.25% increase in paddy procurement in Kharif 2020-21, compared to the same period last year.
"Paddy procurement for Kharif 2020-21 is continuing smoothly," the ministry said.
During the ongoing season, it has procured 564.17 lakh tonne of paddy up to 16 January, from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Karnataka and West Bengal.
Punjab alone has contributed 202.77 lakh tonne which is 35.94% of the total procurement.
The government has approved procurement of 51.66 lakh tonne of pulse and oilseeds under the price support scheme (PSS). Further, sanction for purchasing 1.23 lakh tonne of copra was also given.
Till 16 January, the government through its nodal agencies has procured 2.96 lakh tonne of moong, urad, groundnut pods and soybean having MSP value of Rs 1,613.88 crore, benefitting 1,59,072 farmers.
Procurement operations of seed cotton (kapas) under MSP is also ongoing in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka with 84,80,298 cotton bales valued at Rs 24,802.87 crore procured from 17,27,565 farmers.
Farmers are protesting against the three farm laws and a legal guarantee of the MSP, which the government maintains it will continue. Today the Supreme Court will be hearing the Centre's application seeking an injunction against any kind of protest from the farmers which would disrupt the Republic Day celebration on 26 January.
