Budget 2021 has empowered farmers: PM at Chauri Chaura celebration

NEW DELHI, FEB 04, 2021: PRIME Minister Mr Narendra Modi on Thursday said the newly announced budget had enhanced spending to boost the economy and empowered farmers in the midst of the challenges posed by the pandemic. This comes as the farmers' protests against three bills passed by the Centre continued on Delhi borders.

Inaugurating the Chauri Chaura centenary celebrations virtually, the Prime Minister released a postal stamp to mark the occasion. Calling farmers the basis of national progress, Mr Modi said despite the pandemic, the agricultural sector achieved record production.

He said several provisions under Budget 2021-22 will further empower farmers.

"For the mandis to become markets of profit for farmers, the Central government will connect 1,000 mandis with eNAM [online agriculture trading platform]. This means that farmers will be able to easily sell their produce with ease - anywhere in the country," he noted.

Another measure, he said was the allocation of Rs. 40,000 crore for development of rural infrastructure.

"Farmers will directly benefit from the investment. These decisions of the Centre will make farmers 'atmanirbhar' (self-reliant) and agriculture profitable," the Prime Minister added.

Talking about the budget, he said, the common belief was that the government would increase taxes to overcome the economic crisis caused by the pandemic.

"Several experts said the country has faced a crisis and the Centre will have to increase taxes, put burden on the common man. But the Centre ensured that no burden was put on the people. Not a single new tax was introduced," Mr Modi said.

He pointed that the government has in-fact decided to enhance spending to give further boost to the economy.

Attacking the previous administrations, the PM said, "For decades, the budget was turned into a 'bahi-khata' [account book], launching projects or programmes based on vote-bank calculations … the approach has changed now."
