Gujarat, Assam to hold bypolls for Rajya Sabha seats on March 1

NEW DELHI, FEB 04, 2021: THE bye-elections for two Council of States' seats in Gujarat and another in Assam will be held on March 1, said the Election Commission of India on Thursday.
The Gujarat bypoll is being held to fill the Rajya Sabha seats vacated when senior Congress leader Mr Ahmad Patel and Bhartiya Janata Party's (BJP) Mr Abhay Ganpatray Bhardwaj died from complications after contracting COVID-19.
In Assam, Mr Biswajit Daimary switched parties, leaving the Bodoland People's Front to join the BJP in November last year, thus effectively resigning.
The ECI has directed the Chief Secretaries of Assam and Gujarat to depute a senior officer from the State to ensure that the election arrangements comply with the COVID-19 containment measures.
Further, the Commission has also appointed the Chief Electoral Officers in the States as observers.
The last date for nominations in both States is February 18 with the poll results out by March 3.
