41.75Cr accounts opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana: Finance Ministry

NEW DELHI, FEB 09, 2021: THE Ministry of Finance reported on Monday, more than 41.75 crore people have benefitted from the government's flagship scheme to promote financial inclusion, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY).
As on January 27, 2021, a total number of 41.75 crore accounts have been opened under the scheme, out of which 35.96 crore accounts are operative, said Minister of State for Finance Mr Anurag Singh Thakur in the Lok Sabha.
The Jan Dhan Yojana, which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 allows a bank account to be opened with any bank branch or Business Correspondent (BC) including those of Private Sector Banks.
Public Sector Banks (PSBs), including sponsored Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), account for 40.48 crore beneficiaries while the 14 major Private Sector Banks benefit 1.27 crore, Mr Thakur said.
Giving more details, the minister stated that under PMJDY, beneficiaries open Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts which allow free-of-charge banking facilities such as cash deposit as well as usage of ATM cards, without any requirement of a minimum balance.
