NEW DELHI, FEB 10, 2021: THE Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday approved a Rs. 100 crore grant-in-aid to revive the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilisers Corporation Limited (BVFCL) in Namrup, Assam.
The proposal brought forward by the Department of Fertilisers would allow the State-run plant to sustain operations of its urea manufacturing units.
The Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) operates two gas-based urea manufacturing plants, Namrup-ll and Namrup-lll, on the premises.
"Despite being the first gas-based urea manufacturing unit in India and having all the infrastructure and feedstock availability, it has been difficult to maintain reasonable production level from the existing units in a cost-effective manner because of their old and obsolete technology," said the Cabinet.
The grant money will ensure the "safe, sustainable and economic operation of the plants," it added.
Replacement and overhauling of machineries, and the procurement of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and catalyst items will help restore the urea production capacity of 3.90 lakh tonne per annum.
The overhaul will also retain the 580 permanent and 1,500 ad-hoc employees at the plant.
Due to its location in the Northeast, BVFCL's urea is transported to the tea and farming industry in the region.
