By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, FEB 12, 2021: THE Central government has taken up projects worth Rs. 78,910-crore across 500 selected cities under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme, said the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Mr Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Mr Puri said that urban infrastructure projects amounting to Rs. 78,910 crore have been grounded in since the launch the AMRUT in June, 2015.

"AMRUT being a Centrally-sponsored scheme, is funded through Central and State/Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) share. The total Central outlay for AMRUT scheme is Rs. 50,000 crores of which, Rs. 36,036 crores have been earmarked for Central assistance for AMRUT projects and remaining have been earmarked for Administrative and Office Expenses (A&OE) and reform incentives," said the minister.

States have taken up AMRUT projects worth Rs. 81,226 crores, and requirement of funds over and above the committed Central assistance are borne by the States themselves, he said.

Work worth Rs. 47,703 crore has been carried out so far, including completed projects worth Rs. 16,449 crore.

The minister said 97 lakh water tap connection and 62 lakh sewer household connections have been provided under AMRUT and in convergence with other schemes.

Sewer Treatment Plants (STPs) with a capacity of 1,090 million litre per day have been developed, 1,563 water-logging points have been eliminated and 80 lakh streetlights have been replaced with energy efficient LED lights, saving 176 kilo watt per hour power and reducing carbon emission by 14.07 lakh tonnes per annum.

Under the reforms mandated by AMRUT, the Online Building Permission System (OBPS) has been adopted in 2,205 towns.

Under green spaces and parks sector, Mr Puri said States have taken up 2,538 projects worth Rs. 1,577.83 crore, of which 1,776 projects worth Rs. 1,000.96 crore have been completed.

"This has led to the development of 3,500 acre of permeable green spaces against the proposed development of 5,400 acre of green spaces and parks under AMRUT," he added.

Under AMRUT, the work of selection, appraisal, approval and implementation of projects in cities have been delegated to the States, Union Territories (UTs) and concerned ULBs, he noted.
