Centre releases 16th tranche of Rs 5,000Cr for States to meet GST shortfall

NEW DELHI, FEB 15, 2021: THE Ministry of Finance released the 16th weekly instalment of Rs. 5,000 crore to the States on Monday to meet the shortfall arising from the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), taking the total amount transferred so far to Rs. 95,000 crore.
Of the Rs. 5,000 crore disbursed by the Department of Expenditure, an amount of Rs. 4,597.16 crore has been released to 23 States and an amount of Rs. 402.84 crore has been released to the Union Territories (UTs) of Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and Puducherry.
The remaining five States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim do not have a gap in revenue on account of GST implementation, said the ministry.
"Till now, 86 per cent of the total estimated GST compensation shortfall has been released to the States and UTs," it added.
The States have received Rs. 86,729.93 crore and the UTs got Rs. 8,270.07 so far at an average interest rate of 4.7831 per cent.
The Central government had set up a special borrowing window in October, 2020 to meet the estimated shortfall of Rs. 1.10 lakh crore in revenue arising on account of implementation of GST. The amount released this week was the 16th instalment provided at an interest of 4.6480 per cent.
In addition, the government also granted additional borrowing permission equivalent to 0.50 per cent of Gross States Domestic Product (GSDP), or Rs. 1,06,830 crore, to the 28 States.
