Amazon to make Fire TV sticks in Chennai facility from this year

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, FEB 16, 2021: IN a major boost to the government's 'Make in India' push, Amazon India announced on Tuesday that it will set up a manufacturing line in Chennai to start making its electronic products, like its Fire TV stick, by later this year.

Catering to the domestic demand, Amazon will work with Chennai-based Foxconn subsidiary, the contract manufacturer Cloud Network Technology for producing its Fire TV Stick.

The announcement followed Electronics and IT Minister Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad's virtual meeting with Mr Amit Agarwal, Amazon's Global Senior Vice President and India Country Head.

"India is an attractive investment destination and is poised to become a major player in the global supply chain in the electronics and IT products industry," said the minister, praising the government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for large scale electronic manufacturing.

"We welcome Amazon's decision to set up a manufacturing line in Chennai, as it will enhance domestic production capacities, and create jobs as well. This will further our mission of creating an Aatmanirbhar Bharat which is digitally empowered," he added.

He also mentioned that the company will diversify as they continuously evaluate scaling capacity to additional marketplaces and cities depending on the domestic demand.

"Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, electronics manufacturing in India has recently attracted some of the biggest investments from global giants. Happy to share Amazon India is the latest to join this success story of India," Mr Prasad wrote on Koo.
