Kochi Metro gets permit to use drone for water transport system project

NEW DELHI, FEB 17, 2021: KOCHI Metro Rail has been granted conditional exemption for drone usage for the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System Project (IURWTS), said an official statement on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have granted permission for the usage of Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) under a conditional exemption valid December 31, 2021 or until the full operationalisation of the Digital Sky Platform (Phase-1), whichever is earlier.
"This exemption shall be valid only if all conditions and limitations as stated below are strictly adhered to. In case of violation of any condition, this exemption shall become null and void," it said.
Among the conditions and limitations, KMRL has to obtain the necessary clearance from the local administration, Airport Authority of India, Indian Air Force and the Ministries of Defence and Home Affairs.
KMRL has engaged SenseImage Technologies to operate the drones. They have to ensure only trained and experienced personnel operate the drones and look at its maintenance.
It has to take the necessary permissions regarding aerial photography from the Directorate of Regulations and Information, DGCA or the Ministry of Defence.
"The photograph s/video-graphs, taken through RPAS shall be used by KMRL only. KMRL shall be responsible for safety and security of RPAS and data collected through RPAS," it said.
Drone operations will be restricted to the daytime, from sunrise to sunset, within Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) in uncontrolled airspace only and at a height of 200ft maximum from AGL.
On Tuesday, the Kerala government announced the launch of the work on the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System Project which aims to regenerate the canals of Kochi and make them navigable. Illegal encroachments along these canals will be evicted and the widened canals will be used to strengthen the existing public transport system, acting as a feeder to the Metro Rail and Water metro.
