NEW DELHI, FEB 18, 2021: THE Election Commission (EC) of India announced on Thursday that the elections for one seat in Karnataka and six seats in the Andhra Pradesh legislative councils will be held on March 15.
The bye-polls were necessitated in Karnataka following the death of Janata Dal (Secular) leader Mr SL Dharmegowda whose body was found near the railway tracks in December, 2020.
Andhra Pradesh is holding biennial elections as four members of the legislative council, Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) Mr Gundumala Thippe Swamy, Ms Gummidi Sandhya Rani, and Mr Vattikuti Veera Venkanna Chowdary and YSR Congress Party's (YSR) Mr Shaik Mohammed Iqbal are retiring on March 29.
One of the seats was lying vacant after Andhra Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Mr Subhas Chandra Bose Pilli resigned from his office and quit his membership of the council last year.
Another vacancy arose after the death of senior YSR member Mr Challa Ramakrishna Reddy who died of COVID-19 in January, 2021 after being on ventilator for three weeks.
The notification for the biennial elections as well as the two bye-polls will be issued on February 25, said the EC.
The chief secretaries of both States have been directed by the EC to depute senior officers to ensure that COVID-19 containment measures are complied with during the election process.
