Solar power will make 'annadatas' our 'urjadatas': PM launches slew of infra projects in Kerala

NEW DELHI, FEB 20, 2021: PRIME Minister Mr Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated a slew of power and urban sector projects in Kerala, including the Kasaragod Solar Power Project, via video conferencing.
Giving a big boost to the State's infrastructure, the PM said the projects are spread across all parts of Kerala and will "power and empower this beautiful State."
He inaugurated the Pugalur-Thrissur Power Transmission Project, the Kasaragod Solar Power Project and Water Treatment Plant at Aruvikkara, while he laid the foundation stone of the Integrated Command and Control Centre and the Smart Roads Project in Thiruvananthapuram.
He said India is giving great importance to solar energy as he dedicated the 50 MW project that will be set up over 250 acres in Kasargod district and shared plans to connect the farmers to the solar grid.
"Our gains in solar energy will ensure a stronger fight against climate change and give a boost to our entrepreneurs. Work is also underway to connect our hardworking farmers with the solar sector - make our 'Annadatas' also 'Urjadatas'," he added.
The 320 KV Pugalur (Tamil Nadu)-Thrissur (Kerala) is the first High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link featuring state-of-the art Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology. Built at a cost of Rs. 5,070 cror it will facilitate the transfer of 2,000 MW from the western region.
"Another aspect that makes me happy about this project is – the HVDC equipment used in this project have been made in India. This makes the Aatmanirbhar Bharat movement stronger," he said.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated the 75 MLD (million litres per day) Water Treatment Plant at Aruvikkara that will boost supply of drinking water to people of Thiruvananthapuram. He said the plant was built at a cost of Rs. 70 crore and improve the lives of around 13 lakh citizens.
Mr Modi said the Integrated Command and Control Centres under the Smart Cities Mission will help in better urban planning and management. The Centre will act as a common point of action during emergency situations to facilitate coordinated action.
The Smart Roads Project also envisages converting 37 km of existing roads in Thiruvananthapuram by bringing all overhead utilities underneath and undertaking road and junction improvements.
Kerala Chief Minister Mr Pinarayi Vijayan along with Union Ministers of State for Power, New and Renewable Energy Mr Raj Kumar Singh and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Mr Hardeep Singh Puri were present on the occasion.
