Kharif paddy procurement increases 15.91 per cent in 2020-21

NEW DELHI, FEB 22, 2021: THE government's paddy procurement in the ongoing Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2020-21 increased 15.91 per cent as they purchased over 651 lakh tonne from nearly 94 lakh farmers from across India.
According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, paddy procurement has continued in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Karnataka, West Bengal and Tripura.
As of February 19, 2021, the government has purchased over 651.07 lakh tonne of paddy which is an increase of 15.91 per cent against the last year corresponding purchase of 561.67 lakh tonne, it said.
"Out of the total purchase of 651.07 lakh tonne, Punjab alone has contributed 202.82 lakh tonne which is 31.15 per cent of total procurement," the ministry added.
About 93.93 lakh farmers have already been benefitted from the ongoing KMS procurement operations with Minimum Support Price (MSP) value of Rs. 1,22,922.58 crore.
Further, based on the proposal from the States, the government and its nodal agencies also purchased 3.09 lakh tonne of pulses and oil seeds from 1.67 lakh farmers in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan with the MSP value of Rs. 1,665.68 crore.
Similarly, 5,089 tonne of copra, a perennial crop, with MSP value of Rs. 52.40 crore has also been procured, benefitting 3,961 farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
