Sending Central Police Forces to poll-bound States 'standard practice': EC

NEW DELHI, FEB 22, 2021: THE Election Commission (EC) on Monday clarified in the wake of reports of the Central Police Forces (CPF) being sent to West Bengal, that it was a routine practice to send them in advance to all poll-bound States and Union Territories (UTs).
The EC emphasised that this was standard practice that had been ongoing since the late 1980s and nothing specific to the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections.
"Central Police Forces (CPFs) are routinely sent to all the States and UTs where Lok Sabha/ Vidhan Sabha elections are to take place, for advance area domination, especially in the critical and vulnerable sectors which are identified by meticulous advance reviews and concrete feedback from various sources including political parties and entities," said an official statement.
Area domination means to build confidence among voters in sensitive regions. This year, the EC has sent forces for area domination in all districts of West Bengal, which means it considers all districts of the state to be sensitive in nature.
The EC added that the orders to deploy the CPFs have been sent to all four States and one UT where Assembly Elections are to take place: Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry.
The first batch of 12 companies of CPF arrived in West Bengal on election duty on Saturday. Each company, headed by an assistant commandant, has up to 100 personnel with the State and UT bearing the expenses incurred by the forces.
