MoHUA launches Swachh Survekshan 2021 survey ranking cities' cleanliness

NEW DELHI, MAR 01, 2021: THE Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on Monday launched the sixth edition of the annual cleanliness survey, Swachh Survekshan 2021, which will be conducted from March 1-31 with the aim to encourage cities to improve the status of urban sanitation.
From sanitation to waste management and basic hygiene levels in, the municipal corporations of all the cities have been competing since 2016 to attain the title of the ‘Cleanest City' of India.
Speaking at the launch webinar, MoHUA Secretary Mr Durga Shanker Mishra, said, "Swachh Survekshan has led to a spirit of healthy competition among cities and towns of India. The journey that started in 2016 with only 73 cities with million plus population has grown manifold, with 434 cities in 2017, 4,203 cities in 2018, 4,237 cities in 2019 and 4,242 cities in 2020, including 62 cantonment boards."
The field assessments for 2021 were delayed from January due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will now be conducted from March 1-28.
"Keeping in mind MoHUA's efforts towards ensuring sustainability of the sanitation value chain, the Swachh Survekshan 2021 indicators focus on parameters pertaining to wastewater treatment and reuse along with faecal sludge. Similarly, the crucial issues of legacy waste management and remediation of landfills have also been brought to the fore in this edition of Survekshan," said an official release.
The ministry further announced that apart from ranking cities and States, this year, the survey would also be ranking districts basis the performance of their cities.
In terms of Swachh Survekshan winners, in 2016, Mysuru, Karnataka was crowned India's Cleanest City whereas Indore, Madhya Pradesh emerged as the winner in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
