Speed, skill, scale, standard should be new national mantra: Piyush Goyal at BIS

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, MAR 01, 2021: REVIEWING the process of making Indian Standards, Minister of Consumer Affairs Mr Piyush Goyal on Monday said there is a need to change the approach of the country towards standardisation for achieving faster economic progress.

"Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi has given the three mantra for faster economic development - speed, skill and scale. Now it is time to add fourth dimension of 'standard' into this," Mr Goyal said at the Governing Council meeting of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

While discussing the 'One Nation One Standard' initiative, the minister said that Indian Standards should be set as per global benchmarks.

He also said that the standard testing fees should be reduced in the initial years for the smaller businesses, startups and women entrepreneurs to encourage them to get their products certified and also improve ease of doing business.

BIS, which operates more than 37,000 product certification licences all over the country, was directed to go in for massive expansion and modernisation of their testing labs.

"We have to ensure that no one has to travel far for quality check for want of testing labs," said Mr Goyal.

He also instructed them to create a Customer Charter to usher in highest transparency in its certification process and inspections.

"Producing the products of best quality and standards and accepting nothing less than that, is the need of hour," he said.
