NEW DELHI, MAY 03, 2021: THE European Union (EU) is looking at intensifying its strategic trade and investment ties with India, said European Commission President Ms Ursula von der Leyen during a phone with Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi on Monday.
The two leaders exchanged views on the prevailing COVID-19 situation, including ongoing efforts to contain the second wave of COVID-19 in India. Mr Modi expressed his appreciation of the EU and its member States for mobilising quick support for India.
"Team Europe stands in deep solidarity with our democratic partner India. We are providing rapid support and are delivering assistance to fight COVID-19," Ms Von der Leyen said in a tweet.
The leaders noted that the India-EU Strategic Partnership was witnessing a renewed momentum since the last summit in July, 2020 when they released a ‘Roadmap to 2025.'
"There is clear momentum to strengthen our strategic relations on trade, digital, climate change and multilateralism. I'm encouraged by the prospect of intensifying our trade and investment relations," the European Commission president said.
They also discussed the upcoming India-EU Leaders' Meeting on May 8 and called it an "important opportunity to provide a new momentum" to their multi-faceted ties. Ms Von der Leyen said the meeting would benefit their respective businesses and citizens.
The meeting will be the first of its kind in the EU+27 format since the UK left the grouping in February, 2020.
