NEW DELHI, MAY 05, 2021: THE Ministry of Civil Aviation on Wednesday granted conditional exemption to 20 private entities to take up 'Beyond Visual Line of Sight' (BVLOS) experimental drone operations to help create a framework for future drone deliveries and other major applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
As opposed to 'Visual Line of Sight' (VLOS) where pilots have to maintain continuous and unaided visual contact with the drone, BVLOS operations allow for remote piloting. The preliminary permission grant is envisioned to assist the supplementary framework development of subsequent UAV rules pertaining to BVLOS operations.
The shortlisted organisations include Aerospace Industry Development Association of Tamil Nadu (AIDAT), Centillion Networks, ClearSky Flight Consortium, Dhaksha Unmanned Systems, Dunzo Air Consortium, Sagar Defence Engineering, Skylark Drones and Swiggy, Spicejet and Virginia Tech India, among others.
The Central government had constituted the BVLOS Experiment Assessment and Monitoring (BEAM) Committee to invite government and educational institutions to take up BVLOS operations.
The exemptions are subject to complete adherence to the requirements stated by the BEAM expert committee and shall be valid for a period of one year.
