PM to discuss healthcare cooperation at India-EU summit

By TIOL News Service

NEW DELHI, MAY 07, 2021: THE Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi will participate in the India-European Union (EU) Leaders’ summit on May 8 as a special invitee of European Council President Mr Charles Michel, said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday. On the table will be topics such as resumption of the stalled free trade talks and COVID-19 relief efforts.

The summit is hosted by Portugal’s Prime Minister Mr Antonio Costa during an informal meeting of the European Council. On Saturday, Mr Modi will join all 27 EU leaders in a format seen “only once before, with the US President in March,” noted the MEA.

The leaders will be exchanging views on the COVID-19 pandemic and healthcare cooperation, fostering sustainable and inclusive growth and strengthening the India-EU economic partnership as well as regional and global issues of mutual interest.

We will discuss how to reinforce our Strategic Partnership with India. I believe the current global situation may allow us to open a new important chapter in our relationship and we should make the best of this opportunity,” said the invitation by Mr Michel.

The two sides are also expected to resume talks on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) after eight years, along with other deals on investment and geographical indications.

The MEA emphasised that the “unprecedented” summit is a significant political milestone and will further build on the momentum witnessed in the relationship since the 15th India-EU Summit in July last year.
