NEW DELHI, MAY 11, 2021: TWELVE States and Union Territories (UTs) have distributed over 1 lakh tonne of free foodgrains to more than 2 crore National Food Security Act (NFSA) beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY).

The Department of Food and Public is providing free additional 5 kg of foodgrains per person per month to about 80 crore NFSA beneficiaries above their month entitlement under the PM-GKAY spanning May and June, amid a surge in COVID-19 cases and localised lockdowns.

So far in May, from the monthly allocation of 39.69 lakh tonne, 15.55 lakh tonne of foodgrains have been lifted by the 34 States and UTs, and over 1 lakh tonne has been distributed to 2.03 crore beneficiaries by 12 States.

The department is continuously reviewing the scheme to ensure the timely distribution of PM-GKAY foodgrains in a transparent manner through ePoS devices.

Emphasising the importance of the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ (ONORC), Food Secretary Mr Sudhanshu Pandey said about 69 crore migrant beneficiaries have access to the nationwide portability of ration cards.

Out of 26.3 crore portable transactions ever since the ONORC was started, almost 18.3 crore portable transactions have happened during the Covid period in one year’s time,” he said.

According to the ministry, all States and UTs except Assam, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and West Bengal have implemented the ONORC.

The secretary also informed that Rs. 49,965 crore has been transferred directly into farmers’ account across India under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) programme. Farmers in Punjab received Rs. 21,588 crore while Haryana received about Rs. 11,784 crore in DBT.
